It serves as the primary sensor for BMW’s lane departure warning and related driver assistance functions, using advanced image processing to detect road lane markings and vehicle position. This camera is integrated with the vehicle’s central control unit to enable real-time safety interventions.
Core Functionality
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Activates at speeds >70 km/h (43 mph); detects unintended lane drift without turn signal activation and alerts via steering wheel vibration (adjustable intensity).
- Lane Keeping Assist (LKA): Provides subtle, corrective steering torque to keep the vehicle centered in the lane (available on higher-spec variants).
- Road Sign Recognition (RSR): Identifies and displays speed limits, no-passing zones, and other traffic signs on the instrument cluster/Head-Up Display.
- Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Detects vehicles, pedestrians, and obstacles ahead; triggers visual, audible, and haptic warnings.
